Overview & FAQ

This wonderful event was instigated by our very own Huss alum Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell (Class of 1970), now retired renowned UNC at Chapel Hill Women's Basketball Coach and a 2014 inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Our first successful annual beach reunion in September 2010 was launched because of her incredible leadership skills and dedicated devotion to her roots. Although the first classes of 1965 to 1975 are targeted, our annual Hunter Huss High School Beach Reunion is open to all who attended Hunter Huss, including our wonderful teachers! It is held the last weekend in September when there are off season rates and the weather is still warm and pleasant. The reunion will continue to feature a fabulous band that plays our favorite beach music to shag with at the Spanish Galleon at North Myrtle Beach. Many other activities are offered throughout the weekend to enjoy and rekindle friendships from so long ago. We even bring Black's BBQ slaw to help savor the memories! Ask anyone who has attended in the years passed. They'll tell you they had a BALL participating in Husky Town right on the beach, sharing stories, and dancing to a great band with WONDERFUL music from our past! There is an awesome brunch held you wouldn't want to miss! Smiles stretch from ear to ear on all faces and the laughter can be heard above the music and the ocean roar! This year, our FIFTEENTH annual Hunter Huss High Beach Reunion will be even better, particularly if YOU are there!! No matter what your situation is in life, this weekend is a comforting realization that friends from our past are a part ot the glue that has helped us move forward in life. Please come and experience a walk down memory lane! You deserve it!

Where and when is it?

It is held at the Spanish Galleon and the OD Cafe at N. Myrtle Beach, SC (Ocean Drive Beach) - RIGHT ON THE BEACH!!! It is held on the last weekend of September - WITH THE OFF SEASON RATES!

How long does it last?

Basically friends start to meet in the afternoon on Friday, but many earlybirds get the weekend going on Thursday. We culminate the weekend on Sunday morning with a beautiful service to remember our classmates who have died. The weekend is free for you to pick and choose who to find and where to go. You'll discover it's worth it to come, even if just one good friend you haven't seen for so long surprises you with a slap on the back!

Are there planned events?

Yes!! And they're all FUN!! Many options are offered to really get together with friends you haven't seen in years. Check out the "Schedule of Events" tab. This year's flyer tells all. Count on gathering with friends anytime of the day on the beach or swimming in the ocean (IT'S CALLED HUSKY TOWN!); hanging out at the OD cafe; opting for line-dance lessons, golf or biking; listening to oldies but goodies ALWAYS by a fantastic band for shagging on the dance floor!!! There is an awesome Saturday brunch you won't wanna miss! A morning of golf is available as well...see the "Reservations" tab and click on "Things to Do".

Who do people usually go with? What if you don't have a spouse?

There are so many different scenarios! Many come with spouses, others do not. Many siblings come together who all graduated from Huss. Lots of friends decide to find a place to stay together, too. A few brought either their adult children and/or grandchildren along to enjoy the beach. Appropriately, no one brings children to the evening events.

Where do attendees stay?

Many friends stay at the Ocean Drive Beach and Golf Resort, since the main events are right there! The Avista Resort is next door, and many stay there. There are lots of hotels on the beach nearby to choose from. Other folks have or find a beach cottage or condo to share. And of course a few are lucky enough to live there already!

What do you do if you arrive early?

Your time is your own to do the fun things you usually do at the beach. More than likely you'll bump into someone from Huss before it all begins!

What do people wear?

Each year we've celebrated this event, the weekend is usually a warm sunny one, and everyone dresses in easy clothes. It is sometimes warm enough to go swimming in the ocean and pool, so bring your bathing suit! I've seen shorts and polo shirts, sundresses, capris when it's warm, but extra layers on a chilly weekend....just anything comfortable! WE'RE AT THE BEACH!! The style is casual!

Is there any way I could donate to this?

Heavens, yes!!! This would be most appreciated to fray cost of the band, photographer, t-shirts, and website! See the "Donations" page if you want to contribute!

How much does it cost?

It only costs $30.00 to register per person! You pay when you get there Friday night. Each year everyone receives a great t-shirt/sweatshirt at the Meet and Greet registration event. The rest of the cost is entirely up to you....where you stay, where you eat, etc.... You are on your own for meals. Everyone gets together with friends at a recommended restaurant for dinner, usually near all the festivities. See "Reservations" page.

Why do we go to the beach for a reunion?

So many of us Huskies went to the beach to celebrate the end of school and graduation. It was the meeting place to see all our friends, bask in the sun at day, and shag by the moonlight at night! The decision to combine a decade of classes was so that we all could share the commonality of being Huskies in the beginning when times were more simple. It also presents opportunity to meet and get to know new friends. You'll even discover folks you already know that you DIDN'T know were Huskies!!! But by all means, seek out your favorite pals to join you for a most memorable and happy event!
